What This Tuina Course Covers
Foundations of Tuina Medicine
You begin with the essential principles that underpin all Tuina practice.
These include:
-
the history and development of Tuina
-
Qi, Yin and Yang, and the Five Elements
-
the twelve organs and six climatic factors
-
the twelve channels and the eight extraordinary channels
-
relevant anatomy
This knowledge provides a strong foundation for the hands-on techniques you will develop.
Key Acupuncture Points
Next, you study the most commonly used acu-points:
-
point names
-
anatomical locations
-
clinical uses
With consistent guidance, you learn how to locate each point accurately and apply it safely.
Qigong for Practitioners
Because Tuina requires both physical skill and internal balance, we include Qigong exercises that strengthen your body and calm your mind. These practices help you maintain your energy and improve treatment effectiveness.
Palpation, Diagnosis and Examination
You will develop crucial clinical skills such as:
-
sensitive palpation
-
observation and assessment
-
recognising patterns of disharmony
-
choosing effective treatment strategies
These abilities allow you to work confidently and respond to each patient’s needs.
Core Tuina Techniques
Throughout the course, you learn a wide range of Tuina techniques, including:
-
standard therapeutic methods
-
their variations and functions
-
specialised Praying Mantis Tuina techniques, unique to Kui De Tang
Each technique is taught step by step, so you can practise safely and effectively.
Clinical Applications
As your skills mature, you learn how to address common conditions, including:
-
acute and chronic back pain
-
sciatica and scoliosis
-
stiff neck and frozen shoulder
-
ankle sprains
-
tennis elbow
-
headaches
-
rheumatism
-
Bi syndrome
-
hemiplegia
-
chronic injury patterns
-
numbness, weakness, aches and persistent pain
This prepares you for real clinical work and builds practical confidence.
Herbal Support in Tuina Treatments
You will also explore the use of traditional external herbal medicines—such as liniments, plasters and ointments—and learn how they enhance Tuina by supporting circulation, reducing inflammation and promoting healing.
Supervised Clinical Practice
Later in the year, you participate in supervised clinical sessions. These sessions help you integrate theory and technique into real therapeutic treatments.
Examinations (Optional)
Students may take an optional written and practical exam to receive full practitioner recognition. While not required, these assessments support professional development and help you qualify for practitioner insurance.
Course Lecturer
James Rodriguez, your course lecturer, has operated a successful Chinese medicine clinic for over 23 years. He specialises in orthopaedics and traumatology, and he teaches with clarity, encouragement and deep practical knowledge.
Practitioner Insurance
On completion, practitioner insurance is available through Balens, enabling you to practise Tuina professionally.
Traditional Praying Mantis Martial Arts Trauma Medicine (Beginners) Course

Reviews:
“The Kui De Tang Die Da/Trauma Medicine course took place over 12 monthly sessions during 2020 taught by Mr James Rodriguez, a Chinese medical practitioner and direct descendant of a long lineage of masters of Qi Xing Tang Lang kung fu.
The course covered the complex and fascinating history of Chinese medicine directly related to the lineage of Qi xing tang lang on both theory and practice. It began with an elementary study of Western and Eastern approaches to physical anatomy, their differences and their nomenclature, together with an in-depth study of the major meridians and acupoints. This facilitated learning of the basics of Tui Na , a vital aspect in die da/trauma medicine.
The second half of the course focused on herbology: particularly on the properties and use of some 50 Chinese herbs and their use in several rare traditional recipes typical used in trauma injuries, many of which were developed by the past masters of Qi xing tang lang kung fu. Again practice and theory were intertwined, and a great deal of time was devoted to perfecting these complex formulations and understanding their dosage and use.
Overall the course was a fascinating and in depth study of theory and practice of traditional die da medicine as it applied to the practice of traditional Chinese martial arts. The depth of knowledge that Mr Rodriguez has for this complex subject, rarely taught in the West, is extraordinary, and contributed to a most remarkable experience.”

“On “Wednesday 27th June I had a session of physiotherapy for my right shoulder, which was diagnosed as “frozen Shoulder”. On the 30th of June I attended “A One Day Course in Strengthening Exercises for Manual Therapists at the Kui De Tang Centre. “After completing the course that evening, I found that my shoulder pain had improved by about 95%. For the first time in more than six weeks, I was also able to sleep on my right side.”
Thank you,
